Shabnam in Mirror of Persian Awards

By Marjan Abdi, PhD

With a BS in Computer Science and a BA degree in German Literature from the University of Pennsylvania, and an MBA from New York University, Shabnam Rezaei has spent most of her professional career in selling software solutions to large financial institutions such as Merrill Lynch, Lehman Brothers, ING and Bank Austria. She has held managerial positions at EXIS Consulting and Deloitte & Touche and is an expert in Capital Markets.

She speaks five languages and has appeared in numerous industry magazines. In 2004, Shabnam explored her love of culture and languages and started, an online community for Persians, that today attracts over 2 million hits per month. Through her web design, editing and marketing experience she was able to attract over 10,000 Persian businesses to the site in its first 6 months.

* The World Academy of Arts, Literature, and Media - WAALM®, the awarding body of Persian Golden Lioness® nominated and conferred PersianMirror with an award of excellence in its category of Media and named PersianMirror as the best electronic magazine.  The WAALM’s Golden Lioness Statuette was conferred to represented by Shabnam on its 2nd Annual Awards in October 06 in Budapest.

My first meeting with Shabnam was at the briefing session of the awarding ceremony in Oct 2006, where I could easily recognise her face due to her active attendance on international media such as CNN & ABC News promoting the Persian culture.

Dr. Dorbayani, the founder of WAALM – Persian Golden Lioness Awards® describes her as “A charming lady who could rock the Big Apple and beyond with the beauty of the Persian Culture”.

Here is Shabnam’s message to the Academy and her audience after receiving her award:

“I’d like to thank WAALM and the organizers, Dr Dorbayani and her lovely husband. I’d like to thank obviously the city of Budapest for hosting this event.

We had a wonderful tour of the city today where we were told that the number 896 was very important to the city, so that I’d like to send 896 ‘thank yous’ to the Hungarian audience. I’d also like to thank my parents, Dr Simin Erfan and Mojtaba Rezaei.

I started the website 2 years ago for just basically expressing the Persian culture. The reason I started it was because I was getting married to an Indian and I didn’t know much about Persian weddings, and I explored the meaning of ‘Sofreh Aghd & Arousi’ through the website, and from that the website grew to what it is today, which are several different sections of culture, art and entertainment….

... Finally I just want to say that obviously the purpose of the website is to bring the Persian culture to the rest of the world and to educate the world about the beauty of Persian culture.

But, what I would also like to achieve with the site is recognizing the importance of arts and culture in our own community. Basically giving it the same importance that we give our doctors, and lawyers and engineers. So, hopefully one day when your child wants to be an artist, you will encourage him or her, and I think that’s really where our community needs to go.

Finally, I just want to thank my husband, the producers of Babak & Friends as well as the cast of writers that work behind the scenes to bring PersianMirror to you.

So thanks to all the writers and thanks to all of you.”
