Tehran Art Scene: Omid Masoumi

By Syma Sayyah, Tehran

Once in a while, on our gallery outings, we come across a most interesting artist, good enough to follow and keep an eye out for in years to come.  On average we go to two or three galleries every week, most of them on Fridays as Tehran traffic discourages most art lovers’ inclination to go to many galleries during the week.

Recently on such a Friday we went to the Mah Art gallery (www.mahartgallery.com) in Golestan Street, north of Jordan Avenue.

This was a group exhibition of five young artists, Nazanin Asgharzadeh, Golnaz Afraz, Golnar Tabibzadeh, Omid Masoumi and Ali Chitsaz.  All of them had ten works displayed and they were as different as Tehran life and youth can be.  They were all talented artists, and all seemed serious in their works.

On the opening night, the gallery which is very large and has several rooms was full of artists and the art loving people of Tehran.  There was very little time to talk to anyone.  However what interested me most at this exhibition were the paintings of Omid Masoumi which for the first time presented viewers with the boys’ (rather than girls’) point of view, life, fun, hopes and fears.

I think Masoumi’s work is definitely interesting and I liked and admired his demand to challenge the viewers from a new and daring angle. I have a few of his paintings here to share with you.  I do hope you enjoy them.
