No green light yet for Stone's Ahmadinejad biopic

TEHRAN, July 1 (Mehr News Agency) -- A positive response from President Mahmud Ahmadinejad's office for Oliver Stone to make a documentary about him depends on a positive response on the part of President George Bush's office allowing an Iranian director to make a documentary about President Bush, Javad Shamaqdari, Ahmadinejad's art advisor, said on Saturday.

"If Mr. Oliver Stone can generate the conditions for an Iranian director to make a film on Bush, the likelihood that he will be allowed to make a documentary on the President of the Islamic Republic, Dr. Ahmadinejad, would increase," Shamaqdari told the Iranian Students News Agency.

About a month ago, Oscar-winner U.S. filmmaker Stone sent a letter to the Iranian president's office requesting permission to make a film about the life of President Mahmud Ahmadinejad.

"We have not given a definate response to Oliver Stone and his request is currently being investigated," Shamaqdari said.

"Similar proposals have been submitted by various institutes and many Iranian directors and documentarians have made similar requests," he noted.

"However, the opportunity will only be given to one person, due to the president's demanding work schedule," he added.

"Consultations are necessary for making appropriate decisions and the scheduling of shooting dates. Mr. Ahmadinejad works night and day so a proper agenda needs to be worked out," Shamaqdari said in conclusion.

Iranians found Stone's action biopic "Alexander" (2004) offensive due to his depiction of ancient Persians as idiots and buffoons.

Stone has previously directed "Nixon" (1995), a biographical story of former U.S. president Richard Milhous Nixon.

He has shown his interest in political issues with his production "JFK", which tells the story of a New Orleans DA, who discovers there's more to the Kennedy assassination than the official story, as well as with his productions "Platoon" and "Salvador".

Stone also made the documentaries "Comandante" (2003) and "America Undercover --Looking for Fidel" (2004), which are both about Fidel Castro.
