TEHRAN, July 4 (MNA ) - Representatives from the International Committee of Red Cross will soon meet Iranian diplomats detained in Iraq, said Katayun Hosseinnejad, the ICRC public relations officer in Tehran on Wednesday. However she declined to say when the visit will actually take place.
She said the diplomats' families can contact with them through phone calls.
Hosseinnejad said some time ago the U.S officials announced that the families can meet the diplomats but the visit was canceled at the request of diplomats themselves.
U.S. troops stormed the Iranian consulate in Irbil, northern Iraq, on January 11 and arrested five diplomats under the pretext that they were fomenting violence in Iraq.
The Kurdish Iraqi government announced that they were in Irbil at the request of the regional government and dismissed accusations that they were provoking unrest in Iraq.
On Sunday, the Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari told Reuters that the U.S. embassy in Baghdad had agreed to give Iran consular access to the five diplomats.
