Moin changed old teaching method of Persian texts: littérateur

TEHRAN, July 6 (Mehr News Agency) -- A ceremony commemorating the death anniversary of Professor Mohammad Moin was held at the Iranian Artists Forum on Thursday night. Moin was one of the most prominent scholars of Persian literature and Iranology.

The ceremony commenced with a speech by Ali Dehbashi, managing director of the monthly magazine Bokhara which sponsored the event.

Several writers, former students, friends and family members of the late professor attended.

Dehbashi cited that Moin was one of the principal scholars who undertook the modernization of the method of teaching Persian texts -- "He was not satisfied with merely defining words, he worked on linguistics and philology and introduced the contemporary system."

Researcher Ali Ashraf Sadeqi, who was a former student of Moin, also made a speech at the ceremony and said, "I was one of Prof. Moin's students at the Academy of Literature at Tehran University. We soon became friends and he invited me to assist in compiling the Dehkhoda Dictionary."

Founder of Amir Kabir Publications, Abdorrahim Jafari, who was also the publisher of the "Moin Persian Dictionary", reminisced on the publishing of the six-volume work, saying, "When I embarked on the publication it was with the wish that we could have a dictionary in Iran resembling Webster's and Larousse."

Moin's daughter Mahdokht referred to her mother's role in the success of Prof. Moin. She also mentioned that Moin's personal library of 7,000 volumes has been donated to the Literature Academy of Gilan University.

Mohammad Moin was Born in Rasht on July 12, 1914 (according to his own notes), also reported as April 29, 1918 by some other sources, and died in Tehran on July 4, 1971.

Moin received his BA in literature and philosophy in 1934. He then moved to Belgium and graduated in applied psychology, anthropology and cognitive sciences under Elmer Knowles.

He returned to Iran and enrolled in the PhD program at Tehran University and received his doctorate with honors in Persian literature and linguistics. He was the first doctoral graduate in Persian literature from Tehran University.

Prof. Moin is well-known for his Persian dictionary which he compiled in collaboration with Dehkhoda. Dr. Moin was also head of the Literature commission at the International Congress of Iranology.

He died in 1971. He was buried in Astaneh Ashrafieh, Gilan.
