20 criminals sentenced to death: Iran's Judiciary spokesman

TEHRAN, July 10 (Mehr News Agency) - Judiciary spokesman Alireza Jamshidi announced here on Tuesday that 20 individuals convicted of rape and other serious crimes have been sentenced to death and will be executed soon.

"The death warrants will be implemented in the coming days," Jamshidi told reporters.

He said the Tehran Prosecutor's Office must decide whether they will be hanged in public or not.

The Judiciary spokesman went on to say that the death penalty has been requested for 15 other serious criminals.

Some of those sentenced to death had been gang-raping married women and had been involved in extortion and racketeering networks.

The police implemented a serious plan to deal with the criminals and remove them from society in May.

Tehran Deputy Prosecutor Mahmud Salarkia told the Mehr News Agency that eight more criminals have been sentenced to internal exile and several others have been given long prison sentences and heavy fines.
