Tehran, July 11, IRNA - Iran came from one goal down to edge past Uzbekistan 2-1 in their 14th Asian Cup opener in Bukit Jalil National Stadium in the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur Wednesday.
Italy's Livorno fullback Rahman Rezaei scored an own goal in the 16th minute to help Uzbekistan take the lead. The sturdy defender made the blooper 16 minutes after the kickoff, heading the ball over the advancing keeper Hassan Roudbarian.
Iran, however, turned the tables after the interval, hitting two.
Defender Seyed Jalal Hosseini sent in an inswinging corner from skipper Mehdi Mahdavikia with a spectacular drilling header 10 minutes into second half.
The winner came in the 78th minute when substitute Javad Kazemian raced to a Bolton signing Andranik Teimourian through ball to fire home with a powerful low drive. "Kazemian was named "Player of the Match."
The victory put Iran in the second place of Group C table as China stood top with a 5-1 romp over host Malaysia in Tuesday opening game.
According to the schedule, Iran will take on China Sunday and is to play against Malaysia Wednesday.
