Iran, Turkey to jointly generate electricity

Ankara, May 31, IRNA - Visiting Iranian Energy Minister Parviz Fattah conferred on Thursday with his Turkish counterpart Hilmi Guler on expansion of mutual cooperation in the electricity and water sectors.

Speaking in a joint press conference, the two ministers described the results of their talks as very 'positive, constructive and promising'.

Iranian energy minister heading a high ranking delegation arrived in Turkey late Wednesday.

The visit is taking place at the official invitation of Turkish energy minister.

Hilmi Guler said the two sides exchanged information on water and electricity mainly for generating and transferring electricity, construction of dams and power plants.

The Iranian minister, for his part, said that President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad underlines the need for expanding economic cooperation between the two countries.

There are good grounds for expansion of bilateral cooperation in the energy sector, he said.

Iran is a very capable and powerful country in the region and Turkey plays a significant role in this region, he said.

Iran welcomes the active presence of Turkish investors in electricity and water sectors, he said.

Iranian minister extended an official invitation to his Turkish counterpart to visit Tehran to continue talks and this was accepted by the Turkish minister.
