Nicaraguan president arrives in Tehran

Tehran, June 10, IRNA - Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega arrived in Tehran Sunday morning at the head of a high-ranking delegation for an official two-day visit. Ortega was officially welcomed at Tehran Mehrabad International Airport by his Iranian counterpart Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

During the ceremony, national anthems of the two countries were played and the two presidents reviewed a guard of honor.

The Nicaraguan president, who is visiting Tehran upon an official invitation by his Iranian counterpart, is scheduled to hold talks with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei, President Ahmadinejad, members of Majlis presiding board and Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki.

During his visit to Nicaragua in mid January, Ahmadinejad invited Ortega and his wife to visit Tehran. The Nicaraguan first lady is accompanying Ortega in his visit which will continue till Tuesday.

Time ripe for reinforcing unity: Ortega

Tehran, June 10, IRNA - Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega said in Tehran Sunday that time was ripe for convergence to reinforce unity.

Ortega was speaking to reporters after an official ceremony held by his Iranian counterpart Mahmoud Ahmadinejad at Tehran Mehrabad International Airport to welcome him.

Today, he said, the countries in the South are in a historical juncture, adding that the grounds are ready for forging unity among these states.

The current situation provides an opportunity to establish new conditions in the world, he stated.

The Nicaraguan president expressed hope that the ongoing order in the world would change and a new order would be established based on economic conditions.

In this global order, ties between nations and governments should be democratized, he said, stressing that imperialism and capitalism should be abolished and a peaceful and friendly world should be created.

Ortega said all peoples and governments in Latin America move in the path of reinforcing unity.

He added he is happy with his visit to Iran which he said aimed to strengthen mutual ties.

Nicaragua has entered a new chapter, he said and expressed hope that his country would witness justice, freedom and real democracy and national unity.

He stated that during President Ahmadinejad's visit to Nicaragua in mid January, the sides reached agreements and decided to support each other.

In talks with the US, Nicaragua has expressed its political stance on imperialism very transparently, he said.

Iran, Nicaragua to sign documents on bilateral cooperation

Iran and Nicaragua will sign documents on economic and political cooperation during the current visit to Tehran of the Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega, a Foreign Ministry official said on Sunday.

Foreign Ministry Director General for America, Ahmad Sobhani, told IRNA that Tehran has voiced readiness to help Managua in the fields of agriculture, fresh water supply and electricity generation.

According to Sobhani, the two sides will discuss Tehran-Managua diplomatic ties and cooperation including opening of the Iranian and Nicaraguan embassies in the two capitals and training Nicaragua's young diplomats by Iran.
