Tehran, June 15, IRNA - Tehran's substitute Friday prayers leader Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani said here the opponents to Iran's progress in its nuclear programs have not come to sense and resort to threats and intimidation instead of wisely resolving the problem.
Addressing thousands of Tehrani worshipers at Tehran University Campus, Rafsanjani said, "They (the opponents) bring about issues such as intensifying the sanctions against Iran and spread rumors on military attacks."
Rafsanjani said the psychological war they have waged against Iran is part of the hegemonic world nature but their experiences in Iraq, Afghanistan and Lebanon have shown that these strategies are of no avail.
He said, "The only right path is prudent and fair negotiations and refrain from hegemonism."
"Unfortunately, you can't see the needed fairness on the other side," the Ayatollah said.
"The Islamic Republic of Iran has demanded nothing more that its international and inalienable rights," Rafsanjani said.
He added, "We are still hopeful that these aggressive, bullying and hegemonic powers see sense and do not trigger a situation in this strategically important part of the world which causes trouble later on for everybody."
Rafsanjani stressed that the problem could be solved through fairness and negotiation and they (the west) should take the right path.
"They shouldn't resort to complicated and oppressive ways which would be of no benefit to them whatsoever," Rafsanjani added.
On the sacrilegious act of bombing shrines of two Shia Imams in Samarra, Iraq on Wednesday, Ayatollah Rafsanjani said repeated blasts in the holy shrines of two oppressed Imams is 'a terrible disaster'.
"These stupid acts aim to get Muslims of different sects involved in ideological differences and turn them into bloody conflicts." "All Muslim ulema have advised people, both Shia and Sunni Muslims, not to be influenced by these foolish acts and do not lose their Islamic unity and cooperation and try to uproot these acts so that they do not occur again," Ayatollah Rafsanjani said.
On the current situation in the Middle East, Rafsanjani lamented the internal conflicts in Palestine and said they are fighting against each other instead of fighting against their real enemies.
Rafsanjani said seizing control of the Gaza Strip by one of the Palestinian groups 'is an act in line of the wishes of the enemies, especially the Zionist regime'.
He also expressed concern over certain indications in Lebanon and said, "That country, which has a history of internal conflicts, might be returning to that point once again."
