Turkmen president hails Tehran-Ashkhabad growing ties

Tehran, June 16, IRNA - Visiting President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdymuhammedov praised Tehran-Ashkhabad growing ties Friday afternoon calling for construction of a railway linking the two countries.

Speaking to reporters after being officially welcomed by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Berdymuhammedov said Iran and Turkmenistan enjoy "very good" relations due to their joint history and traditions.

The Turkmen president is on a two-day visit to Iran at the head of a high ranking delegation. He is accompanied by Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov as well as ministers of transportation and railway, agriculture, water, energy and industry and deputy chairman of the cabinet ministers.

He expressed hope that construction of a the railway between the two countries would help promote bilateral railway trade and Iran- Turkmenistan trade with other countries.

Berdymuhammedov added that Tehran and Ashkhabad enjoy acceptable cooperation in the fields of energy and transportation as well as cultural and trade ties.
