Turkey's Gul urges continued Iran-US talks on Iraq

Tehran, June 19, IRNA - Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul on Monday expressed hope tripartite talks between Iran, US and Iraq would be continued. In a telephone conversation with his Iranian counterpart Manouchehr Mottaki, Gul said talks on Iraq have created a positive atmosphere.

Referring to detention of Iranian diplomats in the Iraqi city of Erbil, he termed the move as "unacceptable".

The Turkish foreign minister further appreciated Iran's move to select Ankara as the venue of recent talks on Tehran's peaceful nuclear program.

Expressing satisfaction with the trend of Tehran-Ankara political and economic cooperation, Mottaki stressed that despite US wrong approach toward Iran, Tehran held talks with Washington, at the request of the Iraqi government and nation, to help relieve pains of the Iraqi people.

He referred to the US attack on Iran's Embassy in Erbil and arrest of Iranian diplomats as well as allocating official budget to fruitless measures in the past 28 years by the US Congress as among Washington's wrong policies toward Tehran.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran will continue its policy of support for Iraq's territorial integrity, national unity and a democratic government," the Iranian minister reiterated.

During the telephone conversation, the two foreign ministers discussed avenues for bolstering bilateral relations and the latest regional developments.
