Tehran, June 20, IRNA - A day-long meeting of foreign ministers of the Caspian Sea littoral states opened in Tehran on Wednesday. Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki addressed the inaugural ceremony of the meeting, being held at Foreign Ministry Institute for Political and International Studies.
Foreign ministers of five littoral states of the Caspian Sea -- Iran, Azerbaijan, Russia, Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan -- are attending the meeting.
Participants in the meeting are to discuss the preparations for the Caspian Sea littoral states summit.
Mottaki made the remark while addressing the inaugural ceremony of a day-long meeting of foreign ministers of the Caspian Sea littoral states.
"The Islamic Republic of Iran invites all littoral states of the Caspian Sea to turn it into a sea of friendship through adopting joint efforts and taking long-term issues into consideration," he said.
He added, "Although the former legal regime of the Caspian Sea, currently inherited by us, is not comprehensive, it is a good base to determine the sea's legal regime."
Mottaki said that during the meeting, participants are to discuss remaining issues about a statement already prepared by deputy foreign ministers.
The minister further stated they are also to exchange views on preparations for the Caspian Sea littoral states summit, scheduled to be held in Tehran within the next few months.
He said the Caspian Sea states should not have a negative view on its previous legal regime because no new legal regime has been ratified yet.
He stressed the need to prepare the draft statement of the Caspian Sea summit, scheduled to be held in Tehran within the next few months, adding the case is on agenda of today's meeting of foreign ministers of the Caspian Sea.
Lavrov stated the summit of presidents of the Caspian Sea states could bear good outcomes.
All issues of the Caspian Sea can be settled in a positive and constructive manner, he said.
He stressed the significance of boosting cooperation among Caspian Sea states particularly in energy field and said his country supports its ownership right to exploit mines based on agreements.
He added non-militarization of the Caspian Sea is a must for all its littoral states to support security and stability of the sea.
Azerbaijan Republic carry out activities to exploit resources based on its rights and defined norms, the minister said, adding this would meet views of all countries.
