Camp Ayandeh: IAAB's Iranian-American Leadership Camp begins this week

Washington, DC – Iranian Alliances Across Borders (IAAB) is pleased to announce the start of Camp Ayandeh, its second annual Iranian-American Leadership Camp. More than doubling the size of its inaugural camp held in Boston last summer, this year’s camp will bring together over fifty Iranian-American high school students (ages 14-18) from across the country for a week of building leadership skills and learning about their Iranian heritage. Camp Ayandeh follows the premise that leadership capacity is comprised of four interrelated developmental themes: 1) collaboration, 2) cultural identity, 3) solidarity, and 4) reflection. Acknowledging that a positive understanding of self and community is a necessary component of effective leadership, the camp will create an inclusive environment where the youth can grow as individuals within a community context.

The camp is being held at Hemlock Overlook Center for Outdoor Education in Clifton, Virginia during the week of July 1-7, 2007. In addition to meeting other Iranian-Americans of their age group, the campers will have the opportunity to work with a team of young Iranian-American university students and professionals. At Camp Ayandeh, the work and the play come intermixed, with games of “vasati” (Persian dodgeball), public speaking workshops, cultural activities, discussions on leadership within the Iranian community, and conflict-resolution exercises all happening side by side.

Campers and counselors left last year’s camp with a newfound family of IAAB counselors and campers, many of whom will be returning this summer. Between the seasoned campers and counselors and the new faces, this year’s camp is sure to be an unforgettable experience for all involved.

You can follow the day to day activities at Camp Ayandeh 2007 by reading the camp blog at The site will be updated periodically throughout the course of the week.
