Celebrates The International Women’s Day. An Evening of Songs,
Music, Poetry, Painting, Fact, Fiction, and
Film.

International Women’s
Day, Susan
Khatami, Radio Program
Producer and Program MC, presents Pari Amini, Painter, Mary Apick, Actor,
Director, Producer, Human Rights Activist, Mahvash Azhir, singer, actress,
Aryana Farshad, Filmmaker, Shahla Sarokhani, singer, Ziba Shirazi, singer and
song-writer-composer, Sholeh Wolpe, poet, literary translator, and writer, as
part of The Images of Iranian Women in the Arts series.
Mary Apick
Winner of the
Best Actress Award at Moscow International Film Festival and an activist for the
Women’s Rights in Iran will be the
guest speaker at the Film
Society. She will present excerpts from her play Beneath The Veil
which was presented at the John F. Kennedy
Performing Arts Center. It will be presented again on
March 9, 2007, in recognition of The
International Women’s Day in Washington D.C. Powerful is
indeed an apt description for Beneath the
Veil, because what lurks beneath are stories that expose
the systematic and often violent oppression of women and children in parts of
the Middle East. She will recite REBORN,
one of Forough Farrokhzad
poems in Persian as well. Then, Sholeh Wolpe,will recite her
translation of the same poem in English.
Pari
Amini will
exhibit two of her portraits of her International Women Collection (including
Frough
Farrokhzad) featuring her delicate and intricate form of
painting that utilizes delicate shadings and variations to expertly capture the
fundamental qualities of her subjects.
Aryana
Farshad will present her short
film: Age of
Awakening.
Ziba Shirazi, Mahvash Azhir,
(accompanied by Eric Stein, composer-pianist),
and Shahla
Sarokhani, (accompanied by Nader Bagha,
composer-songwriter-pianist), will perform new songs from their new
albums.
