US envoy welcomes Iranian delegation to Baghdad

Baghdad, March 10, IRNA - The US Ambassador to Iraq Zalmay Khalilzad on the sidelines of Baghdad meeting on Saturday approached the Iranian delegation and welcomed their attendance in the meeting. According to an informed source, Khalilzad shook hands with members of the Iranian delegation.

He had already said on Friday there would be a possibility of direct talks between Iran and the US during Baghdad meeting.

The source refrained to disclose details of conversation between the US ambassador in Iraq with Iranian representative or other members of the delegation.

Iranian envoy says occupation is the root of insecurity in Iraq

Baghdad, March 10, IRNA - Head of Iran's delegation in Baghdad meeting Abbas Araqchi said here Saturday Iraq is facing a vicious circle in which foreign occupation causes insecurity and insecurity is used as a justification for continuation of occupation.

Iran's deputy foreign minister, in his address to the one-day meeting expressed hope that peace and stability would return to Iraq and underlined that Iran is ready to help its neighboring country in this regard.

Representatives from 17 countries and international organizations are attending Baghdad meeting to find a way to end security crisis in Iraq which claims the lives of dozens of innocent people every day.

Representatives from five permanent members of the UN Security Council, US, Britain, France, Russia, China, as well as envoys from Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia are attending the meeting.

United Nations and Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) have also sent their representatives to the meeting.

Tehran, March 10, IRNA - US Ambassador to Iraq Zalmay Khalilzad, who is heading the US delegation in Baghdad meeting, said his country may negotiate with Iran and Syria on the sidelines of the meeting.

According to the report of "Al-Arabia TV network" on Saturday, Baghdad meeting will be held today in the presence of representatives of five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Iraq's neighbors in order to find ways to end Iraq security crisis.

Al-Arabia, in its report, said increasing security crisis in Iraq which claims the lives of hundreds of Iraqi people daily has turned to a complicated problem there and it has also affected Iraq neighboring countries as well as the US which is leading the war in Iraq.

Venue of the meeting is Iraq foreign ministry building and severe security measures have been taken in surrounding streets in the al-Khadhra district.

The report said, " At the head of participating countries in the meeting are Iran and Syria, which according to observers, their participation is an important step towards stabilizing security in Iraq."

An official from the US told Al-Arabia, "Attendance of Iran and Syria in the meeting is very necessary and important."

The other participants in the meeting are: Russia, China, Britain, France and the USA as well as Iraq's neighbours.
