Iran: Boxoffice numbers stand at $8.6m for the year

TEHRAN, March 11 (Mehr News Agency) -- The cinema of Iran sold over 80 billion rials (about $8.62 million) over the past Iranian calendar year (March 21, 2006-March 21, 2007).

Iranian director Tahmineh Milani's "Cease-Fire" broke all the box-office records of the past five years, making over 10 billion rials ($1.07 million) in ticket sales in 122 days.

"Cease-Fire" is spiced with comedy. It follows the life of a couple trying to repair their broken relationship by referring to their "inner child", as discussed in U.S. writer Lucia Capacchione's "Recovery of Your Inner Child", based on which Milani wrote the screenplay.

"M for Mother" by late Rassul Mollaqolipur and "Wedding Supper" by Ebrahim Vahidzadeh were warmly welcomed by moviegoers, grossing over five billion rials ($538,000) each.

Iraj Tahmasb's "Under the Peach Tree", Asghar Farhadi's "Chaharshanbeh-Suri", Hassan Fat'hi's "Marriage, Iranian Style", Saman Moqaddam's "Setareh Café", Ebrahim Hatamikia's "In the Name of Father", and Sirus Alvand's "Trap" come next.

The films which sold over one billion rials (over $107,000) also include Kamal Tabrizi's "A Piece of Bread", Alireza Davudnejad's "The Rival Wife", Shahed Ahmadlu's "How Much Do You Want to Cry?", Kamran Qadakchian's "A Souvenir from the West", Fereydun Hassanpur's "When All Were Asleep", and Siamak Shayeqi's "Bagh Ferdows, Five in the Afternoon".

Iraj Karimi's "Kandelus Gardens", Maziar Miri's "Slowly", Mohammadreza Varzi's "Abraham, the Prophet", Qassem Ja'fari's "The Twilight", and Fereydun Jeirani's "Stars: She Is a Star" are among the films which sold over 500 million rials (over $53,800).

The films which sold less than 500 million rials (over $53,800) include "The Sweet Jam", by Marzieh Borumand, "It's Winter" by Rafi Pitts, "Album" by Reza Heidarnejad, "Military Drill" by Kazem Ma'sumi, "The Child and the Soldier" and "Here, a Burning Light" by Reza Mirkarimi, and "A Faraway Place" by Khosro Ma'sumi.

In addition, the films "The Outcasts" by Massud Dehnamaki, "Good Night, Commander", directed by Ensieh Shah-Hosseini, and "Guest" by Saeid Assadi are currently on screen.
