Iran says no to negotiations, yes to debates with U.S.

TEHRAN, May. 01 (ISNA)-Iran's foreign ministry deputy hoped that Iran could play an affective role in the Sharm al-Sheikh conference.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran is more familiar with the region and Iraq than the U.S. or the U.K. and we hope that it can play an affective role in aiding Iraq in the up coming Sharm al-Sheikh. This is why we from the beginning stated that the presence of these two countries in Iraq could not aid stability and security in that country," said Mehdi Mostafavi, while adding "Their presence can only make things worse as it already has done. We think that they should withdraw from Iraq because it is the only way security will return to that country."

"We are not saying that Iraq's neighbors should take over and start to control Iraq. We believe that Iraq can take care of itself. We believe that Iraqis know better how to return security to their own country," he said.

This official regarding the possibility of negotiations between Iran and the U.S. noted that currently this matter was not possible.

"Currently conditions are not suitable for negotiations with the U.S.; the U.S. has to first prove that it is not our enemy. Of course we can hold debates with them," he said.

"The U.S. has to put away its preconditions and bullying attitude before requesting negotiation with us. The U.S. just can't say that it is interested in negotiating with us and then in action act against us," Mostafavi added.
