TEHRAN, May 2 (Mehr News Agency) -- Iranian director Puran Derakhshandeh, whose films center on teens and children, believes that research plays a key role in the production of useful films for children.
"I never begin shooting a film without comprehensive research and study. Research is a very important element in making a film about and for children. In-depth research is a must to make an excellent screenplay for such films," she said during a review session on her latest film held after a screening of "Eternal Kids" at the Hamedan International Film Festival for Children and Young Adults, which is currently underway in the city in western Iran.
Director Puran Derakhshandeh (L) and non-actor Ali Ahmadifar participate in a review session of "Eternal Kids" at the 25th Fajr International Film Festival in Tehran last February.
"I have had such an attitude since I began making my debut film 'Relationship' (1986). The children's world is not considered serious and their questions receive no response," she explained.
Her movie was selected as the audience favorite in a poll on the first day of the festival.
The film revolves around a retarded boy named Ali, who is taken care of by his brother Saeid, a situation which Saeid's fiancée Negar is not pleased about.
Ali is played by retarded non-actor Ali Ahmadifar.
"I had several alternatives for the role, but finally I picked Ali Ahmadifar due to his unique character," Derakhshandeh said.
"Ali was inactive in the beginning, but the shy and introspective boy has now become an active child," she added.
"Today's children differ very much from those in the past. We should engage in filmmaking with an accurate perception of our society and children's needs," she noted.
"In reviewing Derakhshandeh's works, we observe her desire to make films about children suffering from a deficiency or a special simplicity," critic Tahmasb Solhju said in the session.
"In addition to its entertainment value, 'Eternal Kids' familiarizes us with current realities in life. It also makes use of the element of storytelling while depicting social realities," he added.
Derakhshandeh's other credits include "Nocturnal Emissions", "Candle in the Wind", "A Love Without Frontier", "Lost Time", "Passing Through the Dust", and "Little Bird of Happiness".
