TEHRAN, May 9 (Mehr News Agency) - Saffron price skyrocketed seven times to $2,165 per kilo in the first month of Iranian year (March 21 to April 20, 2007), said the Saffron Export Promotion Fund head on Wednesday.
The figure shows a sevenfold rise when compared to the similar period in the past year, Ali Shariati-Moqaddam told MNA.
The hike will fade domestic markets and will give the way to new foreign competitors such as Afghanistan.
Shariati-Moqaddam said that the country needs to prevent the bulk exports of the product, adding that the export-bound saffron should bear Iran's trademark.
