TEHRAN, May 9 (Mehr News Agency) - In a statement issued on Wednesday the scholars society of the Qom Seminary seriously condemned the Al-Jazeera Television network's offences against the grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani.
The statement described the Al-Jazeera TV network's insult as an act of "media terrorism" inspired by the Zionist agents.
Iran-Iraq Parliamentary Friendship Group also issued a similar statement on Wednesday condemning the TV's insults against the top Shiite cleric.
The statement said the remarks by the TV are against Iraqi unity and security which would benefit the Zionists and the Iraqi occupiers.
In an Al-Jazeera "talk show" last Friday the presenter, Egyptian Ahmed Mansour, questioned al-Sistani's leadership credentials and whether he authored his own edicts.
In a meeting Wednesday with the Iranian ambassador to Qatar Mohammad-Taher Rabbani, Al-Jazeera television chairman Sheikh Hamad bin Thamer al-Thani expressed deep regret over indiscreet remarks by Al-Jazeera and said that Al-Jazeera honors the reverend ayatollah.
According to the Associated Press, hundreds of angry Shiites poured onto the streets of two cities south of the Iraqi capital Friday to protest the insults by Al-Jazeera television.
The protests followed the Friday prayers in the southern cities of Basra and Najaf, where al-Sistani supporters carried banners denouncing the channel and its host nation, the Arab state of Qatar.
