Amir Nosratollah
Balakhanlou, former mayor and member of parliament from the city of
Hamedan, passed away in Tehran's Atieh Hospital last Sunday (May 20, 2007)
at the age of 90.

Mr. Balakhanlou came from a line of politicians, including his
grandfather, Mahmoud Alamir ( a.k.a. Ehtesham ol Saltaneh, an important figure
in the 1906 constitutionalist movement) and served the city of Hamedan in
the 1950s and 1960s, where he was very instrumental in the transformation of
Hamedan into a modern city, implementing numerous infrastructure
improvements. These efforts were recognized in a ceremony held by the
municipality last year. Mr. Balakhanlou was a dedicated civil servant who
loved Iran, was proud to serve people with dignity, and who was never tainted by
corruption.
Pursuant to his wishes, Mr. Balakhanlou was buried
in Bagh e Behesht cemetary in Hamedan, the creation of which he himself played a
role in during his tenure as mayor. The funeral, which was held last
Wednesday, May 23, was well attended by the citizenry of Hamedan and local
leaders.
