Amir Nosratollah Balakhanlou, former mayor and member of parliament from the city of Hamedan, passed away in Tehran's Atieh Hospital last Sunday (May 20, 2007) at the age of 90.

   Amir Nosratollah Balakhanlou

Mr. Balakhanlou came from a line of politicians, including his grandfather, Mahmoud Alamir ( a.k.a. Ehtesham ol Saltaneh, an important figure in the 1906 constitutionalist movement) and served the city of Hamedan in the 1950s and 1960s, where he was very instrumental in the transformation of Hamedan into a modern city, implementing numerous infrastructure improvements.  These efforts were recognized in a ceremony held by the municipality last year.  Mr. Balakhanlou was a dedicated civil servant who loved Iran, was proud to serve people with dignity, and who was never tainted by corruption.

Pursuant to his wishes, Mr. Balakhanlou was buried in Bagh e Behesht cemetary in Hamedan, the creation of which he himself played a role in during his tenure as mayor.  The funeral, which was held last Wednesday, May 23, was well attended by the citizenry of Hamedan and local leaders.
