Tehran, May 30, IRNA - Iran-Iraq Parliamentary Friendship Group issued a statement on Wednesday calling for speedy release of Iranian diplomats kidnapped by US forces in Iraq.
The statement strongly condemned such illogical act which run counter to international norms and once again reminded the occupying forces of their responsibility in restoring security of Iraq.
The statement urged the Iranian government which is engaged in talks with the Americans on Iraq to call for the speedy release of Iranian diplomats.
"Unfortunately, after over three months, the fate of five Iranian diplomats still remain vague," it said.
According to news and reports, the Iranian diplomats are under toughest physical and mental tortures and had suffered serious harm which are of concern to Iranian nation and the families of the kidnapped diplomats, it said.
The so-called advocates of human rights and freedom who have violated all international rules and conventions and stormed Iran's consulate in Erbil and kidnapped five Iranian diplomats have refused to be accountable to Iranian officials, Iraqi government and families of the kidnapped diplomats. They even refused to let the families of these diplomats met them, it said.
The communique reads, After the attack and occupation of the Consulate Office of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Erbil, on January 1th, 2007, five Iranian diplomats were detained by the US occupying forces and transferred to an unknown destination.
In the attack, in addition to material losses and destruction of the Iranian diplomatic office's properties and documents the staff of the office and the people present there were all beaten up by the US military forces."
The press release adds, kidnapping a foreign country's diplomats from their work place at a consular office, and keeping them in captivity for four and a half months, under such conditions that their wives, children, and families know nothing about them, is breaching of the legal and consular conventions, as well as violation of human rights.
In release of the Iranian embassy in Indonesia we read, "Keeping in mind that the premises of a consular office and its staff, are in accordance with the 1963 Geneva Convention, considered a safe haven and free from all antagonist moves, the US forces move against the IRI diplomatic office in Erbil is in direct contrast with the soul f that Convention, and its detainment of the Iranian diplomats is breaching of their diplomatic immunity."
"The Swiss Ambassador, as the head of the US Interest Section in Tehran, was summoned to the Iranian Foreign Ministry and was informed of the strong objection of Iran regarding the issue."
It adds, following the summoning of the Iraqi Ambassador to Tehran to the IRI Foreign Ministry and Iran's emphasis on need for immediate release of the kidnapped diplomats, the Iraqi officials, including Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari, Prime Minister Nuri Maleki, and President Jalal Talabani asked the US forces to free the Iranian diplomats, but they have still not heeded that demand of the legitimate Iraqi government.
The press release at the end asks the entire human rights activists, lawyers, intellectuals, and justice seeking and noble statesmen and officials throughout the world to ask for the release of the Iranian diplomats in accordance with the international laws, and in the name of respect for the civilized world nations.
