State Of Emergency Declared In Pakistan, Chief Justice Sacked

Islamabad, Nov 3, IRNA - Pakistan's President Pervez Musharraf sacked Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry, shortly after he condemned the state of emergency on Saturday.

Musharraf imposed state of emergency on Saturday and suspended the election scheduled to be held in January.

Troops have been deployed inside state-run TV and radio stations, while independent channels have gone off air.

Police also surrounded the Supreme Court. Witnesses said that Chaudhry may be confined along with 10 other judges.

It comes as the court was due to rule on the legality of General Musharraf's re-election victory in October.

The Court was to decide whether Gen Musharraf was eligible to run for election last month while remaining army chief.
