Farabi Cinematic Foundation completes Persian Gulf filmography

TEHRAN, Nov. 17 (Mehr News Agency) -- A filmography covering 800 Iranian cinema and TV productions focusing on the theme of the Persian Gulf has been completed by the Farabi Cinematic Foundation.

The project is part of a wider piece of research on Iranian movies which is being carried out by the foundation, advisor of Farabi's managing director, Mohsen Shams said.

He explained that the compilation had been based on many sources including archives, books, catalogues, magazines, newspaper reports and film production office records. Well-informed cinematic figures have also been consulted in certain areas of the project.

Shams continued that the undertaking focuses on such diverse fields as geography, history and the culture of various locations including Khuzestan, Bushehr, Hormozgan, Baluchestan and the Persian Gulf littoral states.

"The project is especially devoted to such issues as Sacred Defense, anthropology, biology, economy and events related to World War II and their repercussions on the southern region of Iran," he stated.

He went on to say, "The filmography encompasses 121 feature-length movies, 38 short films, 591 documentaries, and 60 TV programs.

The films listed narrate the eighty-year history of Iran's filmmaking industry, the oldest dating back to 1927 (although some films are undated) when Tehran's first railroad was being established. Other much-acclaimed films covered in the work are 'The Lor Girl' (1933) and 'The Abadan Refinery' (1947)."

According to research, 97 directors have produced films on the Persian Gulf, 36 of which were directed by the late Morteza Avini and the others being the works of Akbar Alami (10), Orod Zand (8) and Mani Mirsadeqi (5), Shams said.

He went on to mention that in the field of feature length movies, Naser Taqvaii had produced 11 works, Kiumars Purahmad 8, Kianush Ayyari 7, Amir Naderi 7, Mohammad Bozorgnia, Abolfazl Jalili, and Ebrahim Foruzesh 5 works each, Ebrahim Hatamikia 4 and Kambozia Partovi 3.

Shams also noted that the major field of research had been the analysis of news reports on the Persian Gulf.

"This filmography, which is the result of our recent research, is not a fully comprehensive list of all the works on the Persian Gulf, but it is useful as a good source for other researchers," Shams concluded.
