TEHRAN, Nov. 19 (Mehr News Agency) -- Tehran Mayor Mohammad-Baqer Qalibaf has
proposed that an Asian metropolises union be established in order to develop
Asia's major cities and to promote interactions and the exchange of information
among the continent's city managers.
"Dealing with great challenges needs greater power, and I
am sure that Asians can achieve this through interaction," Qalibaf told
delegates to the Asian Parliaments Assembly (APA) at a dinner he hosted here on
The Tehran mayor called on APA members to establish closer
relations with local officials in their home countries and said they should try
to "understand more deeply the capabilities, potential, deficiencies, and
problems of various districts of their metropolises."
He went on to say that Asian parliaments should play a
more active role in efforts to reduce poverty, corruption, and the increasing
gap between social classes.
"We should also try to help decrease gender discrimination
and stop injustice against children and women and improve citizens' quality of
life," he added.
