TEHRAN, Nov. 19 (Mehr News Agency) -- Tehran Mayor Mohammad-Baqer Qalibaf has proposed that an Asian metropolises union be established in order to develop Asia's major cities and to promote interactions and the exchange of information among the continent's city managers.

"Dealing with great challenges needs greater power, and I am sure that Asians can achieve this through interaction," Qalibaf told delegates to the Asian Parliaments Assembly (APA) at a dinner he hosted here on Sunday night.

The Tehran mayor called on APA members to establish closer relations with local officials in their home countries and said they should try to "understand more deeply the capabilities, potential, deficiencies, and problems of various districts of their metropolises."

He went on to say that Asian parliaments should play a more active role in efforts to reduce poverty, corruption, and the increasing gap between social classes.

"We should also try to help decrease gender discrimination and stop injustice against children and women and improve citizens' quality of life," he added.

The second general assembly of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly opened in Tehran on November 17.
