TEHRAN, Nov. 26 (Mehr News Agency) -- Pari Saberi has restaged "The Flying Shams" at Tehran's Vahdat Hall today in tribute to the Iranian poet Molana Jalal ad-Din Rumi.
The play depicts Rumi's first encounter with his mentor Shams. It was previously performed in Tehran in 1999.
Saberi received UNESCO's Avicenna medal in 2003 for the staging of this drama along with the play "Mourning for Siavosh".
"I restaged the play in order to contribute to the global celebrations organized in commemoration of Rumi's birth anniversary this year," Saberi said during a press conference on Monday.
"It's our duty to play a part in these programs by staging such a drama," she added.
"It is important to introduce our true culture to the world. I rarely attempt to travel abroad, because we are maltreated there," she stated.
Saberi was awarded a Légion d'honneur medal by former French president Jacques Chirac in 2004.
Her play will run until December 8.
