TEHRAN, Nov. 26 (Mehr News Agency) -- Former Supreme National Security Council secretary Ali Larijani here on Monday said that the West is seeking to hinder Iran's peaceful nuclear program, fearing that the Islamic Republic becomes an important power.
Addressing a students meeting at Sharif University, Larijani said that certain Western powers are making every effort to prevent Iran from making scientific progress.
"They tell us they don't trust us but they should look at themselves to understand who has the right to distrust," said the Supreme Leader's representative at the SNSC.
He added that EU foreign policy chief Javier "Solana had told me in private talks that we made a strategic mistake about Iran. We attacked Iraq and Afghanistan and, as a result, Iran grew in power. I told him you are again making a mistake because Iraq and Afghanistan were not our rivals in the first place."
Iran has tried to develop full cooperation with the IAEA in order to remove all ambiguities about its nuclear program and to leave no room for certain powers to invent new pretexts, the former chief nuclear negotiator insisted.
Certain Western countries have been asking Iran to give up its right to uranium enrichment. However, Iran as a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty has right to enrich uranium for peaceful purposes.
