TEHRAN, Nov. 28 (Mehr News Agency) -- Iran's second domestically produced submarine, equipped with an anti-sonar system, was launched in the southern port city of Bandar Abbas on Wednesday.
The modern submarine of the Ghadir class became operational during a ceremony commemorating Navy Day, the Fars News Agency reported.
The light underwater craft, outfitted with the latest military and electronic equipment, was designed and manufactured in cooperation with Iran's universities over the course of 10 years.
Iranian naval experts believe that the capabilities of the domestically manufactured submarine are the same as those of foreign submarines.
The submarine was delivered to the Iranian Navy ahead of military maneuvers planned for February in the Strait of Hormoz, the entrance to the strategic Persian Gulf waterway.
In the next stage, Iranian experts plan to launch medium-weight submarines.
