Supreme leader says Iran's advancement requires scientific efforts, research

Tehran, Oct 1, IRNA - Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei said here Monday evening, "Advancement, prestige, and national-Islamic identity of our country require serious scientific and research work."

Speaking at a meeting with hundreds of university professors, the leader further emphasized, "We also need to seriously pursue the elevation of religious thinking at our universities by presenting up to date, deep, logical, and praiseworthy religious thoughts continually."

According to IRNA Political Desk reporter, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution added, "Presentation of professors and researchers' viewpoints at such sessions can lead the group of decision makers of the system to adopt appropriate decisions and policies aimed at boosting scientific and academic advancement." Pointing out that Iran has a rich and proud history and civilization, he reiterated, "If we had progressed at scientific field at the same pace that the Iranians were advancing after the advent of Islam, Iran would have stood at the peak of the world's scientific achievements today."

Ayatollah Khamenei added, "Yet, due to various reasons, the country was kept behind scientifically, and that great loss should be remunerated thanks to the blessed establishment of a competent system in the country, the awareness of the nation, and the supervision of elites at various fields."

The Leader of the Islamic Revolution emphasized, "Concerned officials must devise strategies for materializing the entire objectives defined in the country's 20 Year Perspective, including turning Iran into the scientific pole of the region and the world, with the power to provide incentives for the others."

The Ayatollah referred to the appropriate sensitivity of the university professors for provision of the country's comprehensive scientific scheme, adding, "Achieving that objective should not be delayed, and the Supreme Council for Cultural Revolution should, taking advantage of the elites and experts, prepare a comprehensive, deep, and complete scientific scheme, based on which the curriculum of our universities need to be devised."

The leader of the Islamic Revolution reminded the audience about his repeated emphasis on need for attaching utmost importance to research and scientific works, adding, "The universities, too, should take best advantage of the budgets allocated to such purposes." Ayatollah Khamenei considered scientific and research works to be the source for feeding and nurturing the various academic and scientific centers throughout the country, emphasizing, "If we do not pay due attention to research work, we will remain dependent on foreign sources, and face scientific and academic deficiency in our country."

Supreme Leader of Islamic Revolution Ayatollah further elaborating on the same issue, added, "Of course we would have interactions and exchanges with entire scientific centers in the world, and as we earlier mentioned, we have no reservations for learning, but we do not wish to remain followers for good." He added, "Instead, we wish to reach a stage at which we would influential in our scientific interactions."

The Leader of Islamic Revolution, keeping in mind that his representatives at the universities, too, were present at the meeting, reiterated the need for improving the level of religious thoughts at the universities, stressing, "The universities' officials, too, have responsibilities in turning the general atmosphere of their universities into that of religious centers, but the main responsibility in that respect is on the shoulders of the clerics at my representative offices at universities."

He added, "They should be continually presenting innovative, deep, logical, and praiseworthy religious thoughts, so that every single university student would become their audience."

Ayatollah Khamenei said, "Relying on strong logic, self confidence, and the strong Islamic mentality it is possible to attract the hearts and minds, just as it happened recently at Columbia University." The Ayatollah referred to the measures adopted by the US officials at Columbia University prior to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's address there, adding, "They had mobilized their entire media power, and even resorted to the unacademic and sorrowful behavior of Columbia University Chancellor, in order to infuriate, or at least make passive the IRI President, in order to use his reaction as a document, and the foundation for further hue and cry."

He added, "Yet, by grace of God, and thanks to taking proper advantage of religious logic, and having full trust in effectiveness of that logic, the result turned out to be quite contrasting with their expectations, and the audience there both approved of, and applauded that logic."

Ayatollah Khamenei referred to the deep and precise elaboration about Islam's viewpoint on sciences at Columbia University, adding, The issues brought up at that session would remain in the minds of the university students that were present there and at other university atmospheres, leading to the emergence of various questions in their thoughts."

The leader considered Islam's logic and viewpoints on various issues attractive for the hearts and minds, emphasizing, "Today the people in the West are after filling the major vacuum that exists there, and the answers provided by liberal democracy are incapable of filling that vacuum."

He added, "That is while Islam has truly attractive ideas and thoughts, and a very strong logic and new vivacious ideas in true sense of the word."

Ayatollah Khamenei said that presenting the strong logic of Islam in a language to attract the university students is the responsibility his representative offices at the universities, adding, "Care should be taken not to permit the emergence of thought vacuum for our intellectuals and university students."

Ayatollah Khamenei emphasized the need for deepening the Islamic propagation, and presenting religious issues at the universities, adding, "Innovative initiations on religious and Islamic thoughts match he intellectual indexes, and in such an approach relying on the fundamentals and values of Islam, the new demands of the day are answered, and this would lead to elevation of religious thoughts at universities."
