TEHRAN, Oct. 9 (Mehr News Agency) - Iran will lift its place to one of the world's 10 leading aluminum producers from current 15th ranking, vowed the acting industries and mines minister in Tehran on Tuesday. The goal is achieved by putting the projects into operation, added Ali-Akbar Mehrabian.
The contract of constructing alumina production complex out of nepheline syenite was signed in the presence of Mehrabian and China's Ambassador to Tehran Leo Jen Tung.
Calling the aluminum industry a means to boost Iran's economy, the official added that the country produces 230 thousand tons of the product each year.
According to the statistics, Iran currently meets only 10 percent of the two-million-ton need for aluminum, he said.
Producing alumina, the original material for aluminum, out of nepheline syenite is economical, the caretaker said, adding the experimental stage of production has been conducted and the sector is ready for industrial production.
When the project come on stream, Iran will stand second to Russia in producing alumina out of nepheline syenite, he predicted.
Tung termed the project as strategic, expressing hope that it will help expand bilateral economic and industrial ties.
