Iran: Ahmadinejad officially welcomes Russian counterpart


Tehran, Oct 16, IRNA - President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad here on Tuesday officially welcomed his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.

During the welcoming ceremony, the national anthems of the two countries were played and then the two presidents reviewed a guard of honor.

President Putin arrived here this morning at the head of a high-ranking delegation to attend the summit of the Caspian Sea littoral states due to kick off later in the day.

President Putin and his accompanying delegation arrived at Tehran's Mehrabad International Airport on two Ilyushin-96 planes.

They were welcomed by Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki.

President Putin is the first Russian president visiting Tehran after about 65 years when Josef Stalin visited the country in 1943.

Presidents of the Caspian Sea littoral states including Iran, Azerbaijan, Russia, Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan are to attend the day-long summit to kick off in Tehran this morning.

Participants of the summit are to exchange views on how to find a way for fair use by all neighboring states of the natural resources of the Caspian Sea.

Bilateral issues as well as the latest international developments will be reviewed by the participants in the meeting on the sidelines of the summit.

All-out cooperation among the five littoral states of the sea would be also discussed by the participants in the summit.

Issues related to the Caspian Sea including its legal regime would top the agenda of the summit.
