Tehran, Oct 28, IRNA - Director General of the American Affairs Department at Foreign Ministry Ahmad Sobhani said here Sunday that the US' unilateral sanctions against Iran are doomed to failure.
Sobhani said in an interview that the US sanctions and its statesmen's hostility to Iran's Islamic Revolution are not something new and the sanctions date back to as far as 28 years ago.
"Iran's stance on the issue is clear. We believe such measures are illegal and in line with the US unilateralism. That (imposition of nilateral sanctions) can be called a sort of economic terrorism aiming to destabilize international economic system and structure and are destructive in nature. Oil price hike is in fact one of the adverse effects of the measures on international economy," he added.
He said the sanctions would bring about further isolation for the West's camp, the US in particular.
Compared to others, Iran's economic structure would be less vulnerable to the sanctions, he added.
"Iran's economy does not depend on the US economy and such measures as replacing the US dollar with other hard currencies and recent events such as devaluation of the US dollar and rise in oil prices have already checked effects of such sanctions," he added.
He told reporters that following consecutive failure in its hostile attempts against Iran, the US has initiated a war of nerves by declaring unilateral sanctions on Iran.
"Of course, the US propaganda campaign against Iranian nuclear program dates back to several years ago. It was heightened by resignation of nuclear negotiator Ali Larijani. The US spread rumor about resignation of Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki. This will continue in future too."
Shahidi said that IAEA Director-General Mohamed ElBaradei's positive report on Iran and his insistence upon diplomacy and Iran-IAEA continued talks indicated failure of the Security Council members to form international consensus against Iranian nuclear program.
He said that the US has failed to reach its objectives in Iraq, Afghanistan, Lebanon and Palestine and the current situation in Iraq is disappointing for the White House, so, Washington has resorted to such unilateral sanctions.
