Rafsanjani warns west against repeating mistakes on Iran's nuclear issue

Tehran, Sept 7, IRNA Tehran's substitute Friday prayers leaders Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani said the United States and the West should not repeat their mistakes on Iran's peaceful nuclear issue.

Addressing the US and the West, Ayatollah Rafsanjani said,"If any way out is left, it is negotiation. Don't repeat mistakes. Islamic Iran is not seeking atomic weapons and will use the technology in the service of mankind."

Speaking to thousands of worshipers at Tehran University Campus, Ayatollah Rafsanjani said,"Iran's nuclear dossier has been unfairly taken to the UN Security Council and they are annoying the oppressed Iran."

He referred to IAEA's latest report on Iran's nuclear issue and said, "IAEA has recently shown its good will and we hope that they reach the ideal point in future."
Rafsanjani regretted that US and France have not accepted IAEA's report and insist that the case should be examined at the UN Security Council.

Elsewhere in his sermon, Rafsanjani raised the issue of September 11' and said, "After almost six years of the event, the real story is not yet known."

"US President Bush took advantage of the event and resorted to projection and followed his neocolonial objectives and made an 'insecure atmosphere' all over the world," Rafsanjani said.

"On the pretext of confronting terrorism, US ruling elite attacked two countries as the axis of evil," he added.

"They thought that they could surround Iran by invading Iraq and Afghanistan. They devised the "Greater Middle East" plan to make Israel eternal and spent so much money that they cannot announce the figures to people.

"They suffered heavy casualties and damage and now it is known that they are not even capable of keeping a country like Afghanistan, so they got help from NATO and they have disgraced it too," Rafsanjani said.

"30 countries have military forces in Iraq and the result is displacement of millions of Iraqis and almost one million Iraqis have been killed and Iraq's infrastructure has been totally destroyed.

"The US is expecting a very dim future and the Republicans, as the pioneers of this disaster, are worried about presidential election.

"Greater Middle East plan has failed, surrounding Islamic Iran has had reverse effects and the US itself is now surrounded and they beg us to help them out," Ayatollah Rafsanjani said.

"This is a lesson better that the one the Americans got in Vietnam," he added.

On domestic issues, Ayatollah Rafsanjani expounded on the importance of the 'Assembly of Experts', a constitutional body to choose the supreme leader. Rafsanjani was recently elected as the head of this assembly in the wake of passing away of its former speaker Ayatollah Ali Meshkini.
