To celebrate the 800th birth anniversary of the renowned Persian Sufi poet, Mawlana Jalaluddin Balkhi Rumi (1207-1273) a program of lectures, poetry reading, and music will be held at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. Rumi (as he is simply known in the Western world) is one of the most-widely read poets in North America. Many literary, cultural and spiritual organizations are celebrating his birth anniversary this year, including UNESCO which has issued a Commemorative Medal in honor of Rumi.

The program entitled, In the Ocean of Rumi: Celebration of Rumi 800, will be held at the Orson Spencer Hall, University of Utah on September 29 (Saturday) from 8-10 PM. The even is free for the public and is sponsored by the Rumi Poetry Club (Utah), the University of Utah Middle East Center, the AVA Musical Group (Utah) and Pars Market (Salt Lake City).

The program includes lectures on Mawlana Rumi’s life story by Dr. Soheila Amirsoleimani (University of Utah) and Rumi’s poetry and vision by Dr. Rasoul Sorkhabi (Rumi Poetry Club). Recitation of Rumi’s poems both in English and Persian (Rumi’s own language) and classic Persian music inspired by Rumi’s poems (performed by the AVA Group) are also parts of the program.
