Iran: Oil Ministry official says 46 new wells to be dug this year

Tehran, April 8, IRNA - Technical Director of Oil Ministry's Central Regions' Oil Company said here Monday his affiliated company's current (Iranian) year (ending on March 20th, 2009) activities would include digging 46 new oil wells and mending 13 more.

Abdolbaqi Qofrani who was speaking for managers of the Central Region's Oil Company (CROC) at Oil Industry's Number One Club said that oil well digging is one of the most costly activities of the oil industry, adding, "Our main effort at CROC this year would be focussed on decreasing the lengthy period of oil well digging."

He added, "During the course of the last (Iranian) year the digging department of RCOC with its four portable digging machines managed to dig eleven oil and gas wells and to mend 13 wells, achieving the record of digging 48,800 meters of oil and gas wells in central parts of Iran at the cost of 117 million US dollars.

Qofrani estimated that the cost of oil and gas well digging in current Iranian Year (1378) would be more than 400 million dollars, saying, "We will need nineteen derricks for digging 46 new oil wells and mending 13 old ones, while there are currently nine wells being dug in central parts of Iran."

Qofrani said that the survival of digging industry in Iran depends on discovery of and getting access to new oil fields, arguing, "Oil resources within the countries' oil fields are doomed to end and in order to keep the oil and gas digging industry in a blossoming status it is necessary to discover new fields."

He said that "correcting the maps of the country's subterranean curves" and geological findings as well as computerized planning of the country's oil resources were among the other conducted plans of the RCOC during the past year adding, "Two and three dimensional seismography of the country's new gas fields, such as those in Kouhmand, Aqar, and Shogoun regions would begin in the course of this year."

The technical director of RCOC reiterated, "Preservation of country's national wealth is not restricted to subterranean resources, since it includes the resources above earth and among the most important programs of the RCOC during the course of the current year here is evaluation of the country's oil and gas storage tanks and facilities."

Qofrani said that the future plans of RCOC would be mainly focused on expansion of new oil and gas fields in Shakheh, Aban, Azar, Kouh Reeg, Zireh and Namak Qarbi fields, concluding, "By the year 2011, relying on development and putting to use of RCOC's new oil and gas fields, this company's oil production capacity would increase to 500,000 barrels and its gas production to 400 million cubic meters.
