Washington,
D.C. - Farrah Douglas, a prominent Iranian American businesswoman and
community activist, is currently a candidate for the city council of Carlsbad,
California. Douglas is seeking the seat currently occupied by Julie Nygaard.
Nygaard was appointed to the council in 2007 when the ailing Norine Sigafoose
resigned due to ill health. Nygaard is not running for reelection.
Douglas was born in Iran. She put herself through college there, earning a B.A.
in English and French literature/translation. After graduating from college, she
worked as a journalist, report, writer, translator and interpreter. After
immigrating to the U.S. in 1979, she attended Mira Costa College and Palomar
College while obtaining her real estate license and working as a real estate
agent. She also received a master's degree in philosophy from San Diego State
University.
Douglas and her husband have been the owners of a small printing business in
Carlsbad since 1990. The first day their shop opened, the couple made only 50
cents. Since then, the business has grown exponentially to become very
successful.
Douglas has been extremely active in the community life of Carlsbad. She has
served as chairman of the board of the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce. She has
been on the board of directors of the Boys and Girls Club of Carlsbad, the
Carlsbad Library and Arts Foundation, and the Carlsbad High Noon Rotary, among
other organizations. The awards she has won include the Carlsbad Unified School
District Recognition Award (1998, from the Chamber Education Committee) the
Carlsbad Christmas Bureau Recognition Award (2000), and Congressman Darrell
Issa's Outstanding Community Service Award (2001). In 2006, Douglas was selected
by the City Council to serve as a voting member on the Carlsbad Planning
Commission.
"I have found great enjoyment and satisfaction through my efforts in public
service. Now, the spirit of service I've exhibited during the past 20 years has
led me to the decision to seek office as a member of the City Council," says
Douglas. "With my business background, my knowledge of our city, my global
outlook and understanding, my open door policy, my commitment to listen and
understand your concerns and issues and my honest and thoughtful leadership
style, I will be a diligent and productive council member, who understands the
true meaning of public service."
Douglas' campaign committee is titled "Farrah Douglas for the Future." Carlsbad
Mayor Bud Lewis is her "honorary" campaign chairman, while Planning Commission
Chairwoman Julie Baker is her actual campaign manager. "I support Farrah for
Carlsbad City Council because of her strong work ethics, intelligence and
determination to do what's right for our citizens. Farrah has proven her
leadership abilities as a business owner and as a volunteer on many civic boards
and commissions in Carlsbad," explains Baker.
