Supreme Leader: Iran, Syria to continue friendly ties

Tehran, Aug 3, IRNA - Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei said on Sunday that the current relationship between Iran and Syria is very consolidated and promising. The Supreme Leader made the remarks after receiving visiting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his entourage in Tehran on Sunday.

"Late Hafez al-Assad laid the foundations of strong ties between Iran and Syria that despite various efforts (made by enemies) to damage such ties, the friendly relationship between the two countries still continues," said Ayatollah Khamenei.

"You have pursued the path of your late father, and the current good ties is the result of treading the same path," the Supreme Leader told President Assad.

The Supreme Leader also described the current relations between Iran and Syria as more consolidated than before, adding that Iran and Syria have made remarkable achievements at regional and international levels.

The Supreme Leader also expressed the hope that the current visit of the Syrian president to Tehran as well as the agreements signed between the two sides would help further bolster all out ties between the two sides.

The Syrian president, for his part, said existing ties between Tehran and Damascus are very consolidated and strategic.

"I am very happy to witness the remarkable achievements and success of Islamic resistance in Lebanon and uplifted status of Hamas movement in Palestine and that our enemies are in a weak situation," he said.

He also called his talks with the Iranian president as very promising and fruitful.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was also present in the meeting.

Syrian president officially seen off

Tehran, Aug 3, IRNA - Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was officially seen off by his Iranian counterpart President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad Sunday at the Presidential premises downtown Tehran.

The two presidents reviewed a guard of honor after listening to the national anthems of Iran and Syria.

This is the third visit to Tehran of President Assad since President Ahmadinejad took office in 2005.

During his stay, the Syrian president met with Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, President Ahmadinejad and Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki.

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Mouallem and a number of high-ranking officials of the country are accompanying President Assad in his Tehran visit.

The Iranian and Syrian delegations discussed several major issues including expansion of Tehran-Damascus political and economic relations as well as regional developments.

Prior to the ceremony, the two presidents attended a joint press conference during which they stressed the need for strengthening Tehran-Damascus relations as well as their bilateral cooperation.

They also stressed that the two capitals would continue "with more coordination a common path previously agreed upon by the two sides."

President Assad's current visit to Tehran was given vast coverage by Western media as Syria has recently entered a round of talks with the Zionist regime under Turkish mediation.
