Washington, D.C. - July 29, 2008 - The Iranian American Bar Association (IABA) is pleased to announce the launching the first of a series of Working Group documents, a collection of memoranda on specific legal matters that are of interest to the Iranian-American community. This is part of an effort by the IABA to introduce the community to the legal complexities arising from these issues, as well as providing the community with a form to discuss them.
Group documents provide concise and basic guidelines in very simplified
language, and as such should not be considered as legal advice. Accordingly, the
IABA urges everybody to discuss any related issues that may pertain to them with
qualified legal counsel.
Working Group document 1 focuses on the current transactions regulations enforced by the United States Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), the agency which administers and enforces economic and trade sanctions with respect to Iran. The paper also provides a general discussion on when specific licenses from the United States government are needed to export goods, services, or technologies to Iran for humanitarian purposes and how licenses can be obtained.
