Iran: 120,000 CNG cars produced in 4 months

Tehran, Aug 4, IRNA - Minister of Industries and Mines Ali Akbar Mehrabian said that more than 120,000 gas-burning cars were produced and delivered by domestic car manufacturing companies during March 21-July 21.

According to a report by Public Relations Department of the ministry, Mehrabian added at the closing ceremony of the First National Conference on CNG and Allied Industries that a total of 700,000 CNG cars has been produced in the past years.

"Some 429,000 CNG cars were delivered in 2007, 146,000 in 2006 while the figure was less than 20,000 in 2005," he said.

Mehrabian further said that currently, Iran Khodro Company has the potential to produce 200,000 cars with CNG-powered engines and efforts are underway to equip Saipa Company with the same facilities too.

Referring to the manufacturing of gas cylinders in the country, he also pointed out that production capacity of cylinders will reach 420,000 by March.

Measures have also been taken to produce composite cylinders, Mehrabian noted.

The minister listed safety of cars, sufficient number of CNG stations, building confidence among customers in after-sales services and a long-term planning as among the points which should be given further attention.

Stating that Iran ranks second in terms of gas reserves in the world, Mehrabian also said that CNG should be used due to its environmental and economic advantages.
