The ecological significance of the lake and the destructive impacts of its drying prompted the MPs to sign the letter, he said.
Putting the annual evaporation in the sea at 5.5 billion cubic meters, he further said that this is while a total of 1.5 billion cubic meters of water flows into it each year.
This has created critical condition for the lake, Zaker complained.
He also said that based on a governmental approval to channel water from Zab River to the lake, each year some 120 billion rials would be spent on the project, but at this rate, it will take 12 years to complete the scheme.
Expert studies show that the southern section of the lake will dry up due to evaporation within eight years, he said, describing it as a serious threat to the environment.
Putting the funds for expediting the project to reroute Zab River water to the lake at 3,000 billion rials, Zaker said that MPs called for allocating necessary budget as soon as possible.
Located between the West and East Azarbaijan provinces, Orumiyeh Lake has 102 small and big isles, a number of which are unique flora and fauna species. It is the biggest Iranian lake and considered one of the beautiful manifestations of nature.
