Faith in Media: Improving Coverage of Islam and Other Religions

Conference in Istanbul, Turkey: December 14 to 16
Reporting projects to follow

The International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) is seeking applications for an exciting program that will pair U.S. and Muslim-World journalists for joint reporting projects on issues of importance to audiences in both places.

With support from Carnegie Corporation of New York, ICFJ will hold a conference Dec. 14-16 in Istanbul, Turkey, called "Faith in Media: Improving Coverage of Islam and Other Religions." Four pairs of journalists will embark on joint reporting projects in Muslim countries and in the United States. Reporting does not have to take place immediately after the conference.

Applicants from either the United States or a majority Muslim country may propose projects. ICFJ will select four projects that will be funded by this program. ICFJ will then find reporting partners for the journalists whose proposals have been selected. (For example, if a U.S. journalist has successfully proposed a project in the United States and Indonesia, ICFJ will find an Indonesian journalist to pair with the American. If an Egyptian journalist has successfully proposed a project in Egypt and the United States, ICFJ will find a U.S. journalist to pair with the Egyptian.)

Each of the four pairs of journalists will attend the conference in Istanbul, along with other participants from the United States and majority Muslim countries. The projects will be discussed and refined at the conference. The pairs will then have several months in which they will conduct reporting together (approximately one week in each country). The pairs will be encouraged to collaborate on the writing of the stories, but they are not required to publish or broadcast identical stories in translation.

Reporting projects that explore issues in Islam and other religions are encouraged, but other topics will also be considered. Applicants may be from any medium. Ability to work in English is required. All expenses for the conference and the joint reporting projects will be covered, but ICFJ cannot pay participants' salaries.

The deadline for applications is September 1, 2008. For questions, please write to
