Iran blocks investigative reporting web site Alef

The Iranian judiciary blocked access to the news Web site Alef after the site launched an investigation into the validity of the academic records of cabinet member Ali Kordan.

Kordan received his vote of confidence as Iran's new minister of interior in early August despite allegations by a member of parliament that his honorary doctorate from the University of Oxford was counterfeit.

Alef, which is run by a political ally of the president, launched an investigation and reported that the documents produced by Kordan are fake. None of the people who signed his doctorate have ever held an office at the University of Oxford that authorized them to issue an honorary doctorate, Alef reported.

Alef was filtered following a warning by the Ministry of Interior that it would launch a judicial complaint against those who report against the new minister.
