Iran's Sajjad Moradi |
Sajjad Moradi has become the first Iranian
athlete to ever qualify for the second round of men's 800m in Olympic Games.
Moradi finished sixth in Heat 8 of 2008 Beijing Olympic Games' 800m in 1:46.10,
but qualified for the next round along with 23 other athletes.
However, Ehsan Mohajer-Shojaei, who finished seventh in Heat 1, failed to
qualify for the second round, which will be held on Thursday.
Jamaica's Usain Bolt set a new record in men's 200m.
In men's 200m, Jamaican Usain Bolt won the gold medal, setting a new record of
19.30 seconds, slashing 0.02 of a second off American Michael Johnson's record
at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
Churandy Martina of the Dutch Antilles claimed silver in 19.82sec and defending
Olympic champion Shawn Crawford of the United States took bronze in 19.96sec
after team-mate Wallace Spearmon (19.95sec) was disqualified for running out of
his lane.
Jamaica claimed a second gold medal in athletics on Wednesday when Melaine
Walker finished first in the women's 400m hurdle race in 52.46 seconds, ahead of
American Sheena Tosta and Britain's Tasha Danvers who took silver and bronze
respectively.
Jamaica has so far collected seven medals in Beijing, all in sprinting events,
including two prestigious gold medals in the men's and women's 100m races.
