Tehran, Dec 7, IRNA - President Rafael Correa Delgado called his country's relations with Iran "strategic" and asked for expansion of ties.
In a meeting with Secretary of Supreme National Security Council Saeed Jalili here on Saturday, President Delgado said, "Our approach in strategic ties is strengthening the real nature of Ecuador as an important country in Latin America and severing dependence on the USA."
He said, "Ties between Quito and Tehran are beyond merely trade relations" underlining the necessity of deepening ties between the two countries.
The visiting president said, "Deep cooperation between Iran and Ecuador in the international arena will help establish balance in the world equations.
Jalili, for his part, expressed Iran's readiness to expand and deepen strategic ties with Ecuador in all fields.
He continued, "We believe in necessity of strengthening south-south ties and we are ready to transfer our experiences in different fields to Ecuador."
President Rafael Correa Delgado heading a high ranking delegation arrived in Tehran on Friday evening.
Ministers of Oil and Mines, Foreign Affairs, Agriculture and Defence are among President Delgado accompanying delegation.
Ecuador with 256.37 thousand square kilometers and 14 million population is located in South America between Colombia, Pero and Pacific Ocean.
Iran-Ecuador to expand defence ties
Ecuadorian Defence Minister Javier Ponce, who is in Tehran accompanying President Delgado, discussed issues of mutual interest with his Iranian counterpart General Mostafa Mohammad Najjar here Saturday.
Expressing pleasure with the first visit of an Ecuadorian defence official to Iran, General Mohammad Najjar said, "Common intention of the two countries can pave the way for establishment and expansion of bilateral defensive relations between Iran and Ecuador."
He also praised awareness of independent nations, especially the people of Ecuador and said, "Resistance of the nations should continue until removal of the aliens' dominance."
By expressing pleasure with being in Iran, Ponce said, "We are closely acquainted with Iran's defense abilities and we will discuss ways to expand and develop ties in this concern."
