RFE/RL - Six Iranian human rights watchdogs have urged the United Nations to send a delegation to Iran to assess the human rights situation there.

The organizations, based both in Iran and abroad, sent a letter to the UN on the eve of the international Human Rights Day, which is being marked today.

Shiva Nazar Ahari of the Students Committee to Defend Political Prisoners told RFE/RL's Radio Farda that "it is very important for the international community to find out the truth about human rights abuses in Iran."

The Iranian human rights activists cited up to 250 cases of human rights abuses in their letter, adding that all of the data was based upon official reports.

60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights marked

Tehran, Dec 10, IRNA - UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative Knut Ostby said that first Human Rights Declaration was compiled by Cyrus The Great, Persian King in 539 BC.

Ostby made the remarks addressing a news conference marking the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) in Tehran.

Ostby added the UDHR was signed on 10 Dec 1948 at Palais de Chaillot in Paris.

He expressed concern about worsening humanitarian situation of Gazans and said that public debates are underway in UN offices across the world over the human rights violations in Gaza Strip.

"UN is not indifferent about the Gazans situation," Ostby said.

"We believe that Palestine and Israel dispute should be settled as soon as possible.

Addressing the same gathering, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) representative to Iran said: "We are aware that Palestinian people specially women and children are suffering in Gaza." Salazar, who is also chairman of HIV/AIDS Theme Group in Iran, also described the efforts made to minimize suffering in Gaza.

"Some humanitarian aids including food and water tankers have been dispatched to Gazans so far," he said.

Adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948, the UDHR is the first universal instrument to proclaim the equal dignity and right of all members of the human family.

The Universal Declaration gives inspiration and a major impetus to struggle for human right and fundamental freedom around the world.

Currently, numerous national mechanism have been installed to monitor their implementation.
