Moscow, Dec 19, IRNA - Gathering of major gas exporting countries, including Iran and Russia, is scheduled to be held in Moscow, according to Deputy Russian Energy Minister.
Anatoli Yanovski added at a press conference in Moscow Friday, "The energy ministers of the major gas exporting countries and the head of Russia's Gasprom Company are ready for attending the international economic event."
According to him, several gas exporting countries, including Algeria, Venezuela, Qatar, Iran, Egypt, Libya and Norway have accepted the invitation to attend the event.
The deputy Russian Energy Minister added, "Participation of delegations from Nigeria, Malaysia and the United Arab Emirates at Moscow gathering is not finalized yet.
He added, "The most important objective of the gathering, scheduled to be held next week, is surveying the ground for cooperation among gas exporting countries in the future."
The Russian official considered comparing the organization of gas exporting countries with OPEC an incorrect comparison due to the different objectives of the two organizations, adding, "Selling gas differs greatly with selling oil, partly because allocation of ratios of gas sales is impossible."
He said, "The charter of the organization of gas exporting countries would be put to discussion at the ministerial gathering and its secretary general for a period of at least one year would be appointed during the gathering."
Deputy Head of Gasprom Company Alexander Medodiev, too, said at the press conference that the new organization would beyond doubt get engaged in exchange of information of international gas markets.
He expressed hope that the organization of gas exporting countries would manage to provide responses to the existing challenges at energy market, including the problems in the course of production and pricing.
On probable location of the headquarters of the gas exporting countries organization, Medodiev said, "We hope the comprising countries would agree on Saint Petersburg."
The Islamic Republic of Iran, the Russian Federation and Kingdom of Qatar agreed on general idea of the need for establishing a gas exporting countries organization at a meeting in Tehran in October, 2008.
