TEHRAN, Dec. 22 (Mehr News Agency) -- Winner of France's Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur medal, Shahram Nazeri cancelled his performance in Konya, Turkey, objecting to the improper conditions and inappropriate atmosphere of the city.
Vocalist Nazeri and his band Molavi were due to give concerts on the anniversary of the death of Molana Jalal ad-Din Rumi, observed annually in Konya during the last weeks of December.
Shahram Nazeri's band performed at the tomb of Shams Tabrizi in Khoy in November 2007
"Unfortunately things are very much in disarray in this city and I prefer not to give concerts in such inappropriate situations in order to maintain respect for the rich culture and literature of my country Iran," he told Mehr News Agency.
"Giving concerts in honor of Molana requires its own unique situation whose setting must be arranged and designed with great sensitivity and delicacy. However in Konya, I observed a number of musicians holding their instruments and reciting the poetry of Molana in an unprofessional and unacceptable manner wherever they found a place including hotel lobbies or even bars.
"And although the band members and I had traveled to Konya at our own expense, I felt compelled to apologize the audience and told them that sometimes it is better to remain silent and simply leave the stage," Nazeri added.
He further remarked that the problem results from our own ignorance, adding, "I don't think the local officials of Konya should be held responsible for the inappropriate atmosphere, rather an organization such as the culture ministry should take action to supervise Iranian music programs during the annual ceremony in Konya."
