Berlin, Dec 29, IRNA - Iran and America will soon hold direct talks on disarmament, the former German ambassador to the US Wolfgang Ischinger told the German DPA news agency on Monday.
"I think the new US administration is on the verge of breaking a 30-year taboo, of not having direct contacts, by engaging in talks (with Iran)," said Ischinger who will head the 45th Munich Security Conference, scheduled to take place in Munich in February.
The German official added American and Iranian political representatives are slated to attend the Munich security which is to focus mainly on disarmament and arms control.
"I view it as indispensable that Iran can sit at the table when we talk about the question of Iran's ambitions, our assessment of it and the continuing development," said Ischinger who added that former US secretary of state Henry Kissinger is expected to take part in the debate.
The high-profile Munich security confab which is widely seen as the top annual gathering of political movers and shakers on global strategic issues, is being financed by the German government.
The Munich security conference has in the past been the scene of violent anti-US protests by mainly radical leftist, anarchist, student and labor groups.
