Iran's first female Olympic taekwondo qualifier in the spotlight

Sara Khoshjamal-Fekri

TEHRAN, Feb. 23 (Mehr News Agency) -- Dubai-based ABC News reporter Lara Setrakian is currently making a documentary about Iranian female taekwondo player Sara Khoshjamal-Fekri, the Taekwondo Federation of the Islamic Republic of Iran reported on Friday.

Khoshjamal-Fekri, 19, made history in the Islamic Republic of Iran by becoming the first Iranian female taekwondo Olympic qualifier.

She grabbed a bronze medal during the Asian Taekwondo Qualification Tournament which was held in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam in November 2007, and thus gained entry to the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

"It is interesting for me to see an Iranian women wearing hijab participating in world games and winning medals," Setrakian told the Iranian Taekwondo Federation.

"In addition, she is the first ever Iranian woman to find her way to the Olympic Games in this field," she added.

Setrakian during her sojourn in Iran has interviewed Khoshjamal-Fekri and also prepared reports on her daily practices.

Khoshjamal-Fekri is currently competing at the 35th Dutch Open Taekwondo Championships underway in Eindhoven, and Setrakian will resume work on the documentary after her return.
